Lake Khövsgul & the Northern Taiga — 8 Days
Overview
An eight-day overland journey to Mongolia's deep blue Lake Khövsgul, the pine taiga, the Darkhad valley and the reindeer-herding Tsaatan.
Far in Mongolia's north, where the steppe gives way to dense pine taiga, Lake Khövsgul holds nearly two percent of the world's fresh water in a long, clear basin ringed by mountains. Locals call it the "Younger Sister" of Lake Baikal, and standing on its shore it is easy to understand the reverence — the water is cold, deep and astonishingly transparent.
Over eight days this journey carries you from Ulaanbaatar up to the lake and into the wild country beyond it: the broad Darkhad valley, the larch forests of the taiga, and the high pastures where the Tsaatan still live with their domesticated reindeer. You will travel by road and spend time on foot and, where conditions allow, on horseback, sleeping in lakeside ger camps and sharing a meal with herding families.
This is a nature-focused summer trip built around landscapes, wildlife and the cultures of Mongolia's far north rather than a fixed checklist of sights. Pace is relaxed, distances are real, and there is room to simply sit by the water and watch the light change over the mountains.
