Overview

A far-western expedition through the Uvs Nuur basin, where salt lakes, dunes and deep nomad homestays open up a Mongolia few travellers ever reach.

This 10-day journey takes you to the far north-west of Mongolia, into the vast and little-visited Uvs Nuur basin — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches between desert, steppe and snow-capped mountain. Here, in one of the most remote corners of the country, you travel between great salt lakes, freshwater shores and surprising sand dunes, sharing the road with herders, their animals and very few other travellers.

Rather than rushing between sights, the trip is built around real time with nomadic families. You stay in working herder gers, help with daily routines if you wish, and learn how people thrive in this off-grid landscape of extremes. Days are spent driving rough tracks across open country, walking along lake shores and discovering hidden valleys where the only sound is wind and livestock.

This is a genuine expedition: distances are long, comforts are simple and the rewards are immense. If you are looking for untouched scenery, warm human encounters and a side of Mongolia far beyond the usual routes, the Western Lakes journey delivers exactly that.
