THURSDAY 3RD OCTOBER—ARRIVAL IN BAYAN-ÖLGII
In the early morning we will transfer to the airport and fly 3½ hours to Ölgii or Khovd. Both towns are small and are capitals in their respective provinces. Khovd was a town already during Manchurian times, prior to 1910, and it has several ethnic minorities with a majority of Mongols. We can find both mosques and Buddhist temples. Ölgii is younger and with a majority of Kazakh people, though Tuva and Uriankhai people also live here. If we land in Khovd, we will drive for four hours in the Altai Mountains to get to our destination. We will use the time for sight-seeing.
FRIDAY 4TH OCTOBER—EXCURSION
Exploration of the surrounding countryside and Ölgii village. There is a mosque, a bazaar, and a local museum to visit.
SATURDAY 5TH OCTOBER—OPENING CEREMONY
The Golden Eagle festival starts this day, the first weekend of October. Participants each take a turn to demonstrate the ability of their eagles, which are released from the hills upon a call or hunt for model artificial foxes. Later on, a Central Asian game “bouzkhas” will be shown, which is a type of a tug-of-war on a horseback with a goat carcass. Quite wild at times. The festival allows you to get a closer look at the eagle hunters’ traditional customs and culture. Most certainly Aisholpan will be there, the now famous young “Eagle Huntress”.
SUNDAY 6TH OCTOBER—EAGLE FESTIVAL
Explore another full day at the festival. You will able to appreciate how eagles fly to their owner’s hand and catch the moving objects or prey while flying. In the evening, you will attend a traditional concert of a Kazakh ethnic group will and enjoy a farewell dinner.
